Interview with Emma Sanders
MC: Hi Emma, welcome! You have incredible life story that is very much grounded, as you say, in reading and writing. Your mom loved to write and obviously passed that trait on to you. When did you decide you wanted to be a writer?
ES: It wasn’t until three years ago that I knew I had to write, or I’d never feel rested, and I’d have to do it no matter if I failed. But I’ve always wanted to be a writer.
MC: Who are some of your favorite authors? Books that have inspired you?
ES: Sandra Brown is my favorite, I will buy every book of hers and she is the reason I got interested in romantic suspense. I’m also a big fan of Nora Roberts, Lisa Jackson, Karen Robards, Catherine Anderson, and Suzanne Brockman. I love to branch out into authors I’ve never heard of and have found many new favorites that way.
MC: Tell us about your books. You write romantic suspense. What is it about the genre that attracted you? How many have you published so far?
ES: I’ve published one and am under contract for another. I love fast-paced mystery, but it always seems to be missing something if romance isn’t involved. I love seeing how two characters will make things work despite their obstacles because, even though we don’t all have a cold-blooded killer chasing us in everyday life, we all have our own obstacles to overcome and to deal with regularly when it comes to life and love.
MC: What’s coming up from you?
ES: I have a short story, Christmas Bells, out for the holidays, I just signed a contract for One Wrong Move, my second full-length novel, and I’m currently working on my third romantic suspense.
MC: Who are you published with?
ES: The Wild Rose Press
MC: Any upcoming contests you want readers to know about?
ES: Yes, actually I have a few contests going on right now, available on my website at www.emmasanders.com
MC: What advice do you have for new authors & writers?
ES: Don’t give up. Keep writing, keep submitting, and remember the industry is subjective. What one person doesn’t like, another will love. You just have to keep trying. Take online courses to strengthen your writing, join writer’s groups, find a mentor.
MC: If you were to compare your work to other authors, who would you say that your work most resembles in plot, tone, or voice?
ES: Can I say Nora Roberts without having rotten tomatoes thrown at me? I could only wish to be similar to her…
MC: What’s something readers may not know about you?
ES: I’ve been an insulin-dependent diabetic since I was nine years old. Grew up taking about 4 shots a day until I started on the insulin pump a few years ago.
MC: How about some fun questions? Do you have a motto?
ES: Right now, my motto is: Don’t Give Up. I almost gave up when a publisher finally contracted me. Of course, I’m glad I didn’t, and when I’m feeling my lowest, I remember this.
MC: How about a favorite phrase?
ES: Right now, the phrase I’m stuck on is the one I’ve adopted for my website: Love is a Mystery. But the one I live by, though it’s kind of a cliché, is so true: A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
MC: Give us five words that describe you.
ES: loyal, determined, hard-headed, creative and capricious
MC: Is the glass half full or half empty?
ES: Half full.
MC: What are your hobbies?
ES: Reading, traveling, crafts, photography, scrapbooking, kayaking, swimming, hiking and research (I know, I’m weird, but I love research).
MC: Favorite food?
ES: Good ol’ American food, Mexican and Italian.
MC: Favorite beverage?
ES: Water, tea, coffee and wine. I can’t live without a nice cool glass of ice-water.
MC: Worst fear?
ES: That there’s nothing past this life.
MC: Favorite movies?
ES: Spiderman, The Fast and the Furious series, The Parent Trap, Top Gun, Dirty Dancing, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. I love action, adventure and old-fashioned romance.
MC: Favorite TV shows?
ES: Smallville
MC: If you could travel to any time and place, when, where and why?
ES: Honestly? I’d rather stay in the here and now. The future is intriguing, but I’d rather not know it. The past is…well, the past. I want to see what’s going to happen now. My dream travel would be Hawaii, because I love the outdoors and it seems so beautiful and inspiring.
MC: Do you have a favorite sport?
ES: I like to watch extreme sports. My husband and I never miss the X games.
MC: How can readers get in touch with you?
ES: I love to hear from readers. Email me at emmasanders@emmasanders.com
